Information about the conference and the proceedings:
Welcome to the Eighth Australasian User Interface Conference (AUIC 2007). This conference is part of Australasian Computer Science Week (ACSW 2007) held in Ballarat, Victoria from January 30th to February 2nd, 2007. This year's conference continues the traditions of previous AUIC conferences, and introduces changes that have been made to further strengthen the conference.
AUIC 2007 received 29 submissions this year, of which 14 (less than 50%) were accepted, giving a strong conference programme covering a wide range of topics. The programme has 10 long papers and 4 short papers, arranged into 4 sessions. While the conference has traditionally been attended by Australian and New Zealand researchers, this year we have presenters, attendees, reviewers, and a keynote from countries outside the region, making AUIC a truly international conference.
This year we have continued last year’s submission process, in order to further improve the quality of the papers accepted at the conference. There are two categories: 8 page long papers and 4 page short papers. Both types of papers are reviewed with the same process, but short papers are designed for new research results or techniques that can be described in the reduced format and do not require a full long paper.
In order to secure the quality and integrity of the paper reviews, a number of processes were put in place. Each submitted paper was reviewed by two assigned programme committee members. The assigned members were also responsible for finding at least one other external reviewer with expertise in the relevant area. The programme chairs ensured that all paper assignments and reviews were assigned to avoid conflicts in cases where papers were affiliated with the programme chairs or programme committee members.
We are also pleased to announce a number of other exciting events at the conference. Professor Steven K. Feiner from Columbia University will be presenting the keynote address for AUIC. Professor Feiner has many years of experience in the area of computer graphics and user interfaces and is one of the leaders in the field. We are very honoured to have him attend the conference and to share his insight with us. This year we will also encourage more in-depth discussion amongst participants by having a dedicated demonstration session where attendees can present their work for others to try hands-on.
We are sure that AUIC 2007 will be a fantastic conference, and this is due to the contributions of so many people. We would like to particularly thank the authors who submitted work, the programme committee and reviewers, and the ACSW organisers.
We look forward to seeing you all at the conference this year!
